Taking The Ultimate Driving Test
To become a licensed black cab driver, you must pass the Knowledge, a rigorous test proving your knowledge of London’s streets. This exam requires you to memorise every street, landmark, and route within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross.
Mastering the Knowledge typically takes students three to four years. It involves intensive study, map reading, and practical experience. Passing this exam shows you have a deep
understanding of London’s geography and are committed to providing exceptional service to your passengers.
Your First Steps to Becoming a Black Cab Driver
Before you can start learning the Knowledge, you need to apply to be a licensed taxi driver and have your application approved.
There are two different types of London taxi drivers:
All London (green badge) – Drivers can ply for hire anywhere in the Greater London Authority area.
Suburban (yellow badge) – Drivers can ply for hire in one of the nine sectors in the suburbs of the Greater London Authority area.
Meeting the Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a licence, you must be at least 18, hold a valid EU driving licence, and have the right to work in the UK.
Following satisfactory character and medical checks, you will be sent the guide to learning the Knowledge of London (the Blue Book).

Stage 1: Self assessment: Test your knowledge on the first part of the Blue Book
Stage 2: Written examination: Prove your understanding of London’s geography
Stage 3-5: Appearances: Demonstrate route knowledge to an examiner
