A Private Hire Driver’s Guide to Pets in Your Vehicle

As a private hire driver, you may receive requests to transport passengers with pets. While some simply want to bring their furry friends along, others depend on assistance animals, such as Guide Dogs. Understanding the rules, best practices and your obligations as a driver is essential for providing the best service… and staying compliant with the law.

Addison Lee’s Policy: Pets vs. Assistance Dogs

At Addison Lee, drivers are not required to accept standard pets in their vehicles. We offer the option to opt in for pet friendly bookings specifically for this purpose. However, it is a legal obligation to accept Guide Dogs and other assistance animals without extra charge. Refusing to do so is a criminal offence under the Equality Act 2010, unless you have a valid medical exemption.

  • Standard Pets – Drivers can use their discretion when accepting pets like dogs or cats.
  • Guide Dogs & Assistance Animals – Must always be accepted, even if you have concerns about cleanliness or allergies.

Your Legal Obligations When Transporting Guide Dogs

Passengers with Guide Dogs rely on private hire services to get around safely. It’s crucial to:

  • Always accept a booking with a Guide Dog unless you have a pre-approved exemption from TfL.
  • Never charge extra for carrying an assistance animal.
  • Allow the Guide Dog to sit with its owner.

Important: A passenger is not required to prove their dog is a Guide Dog, but trained assistance animals usually wear a harness or ID tag.

Handling Requests for Pet-Friendly Rides

If a passenger requests to bring a pet, you can:

  • Ask about the pet’s size and temperament to gauge if it will travel well.
  • Ensure the pet is secured (e.g., in a carrier or harness) for safety.

Protecting Your Vehicle from Mess & Allergies

While Guide Dogs are well-trained, standard pets can shed fur, cause odours, or leave muddy paw prints. To keep your vehicle clean:

  • Keep a blanket or seat cover for pets to sit on.
  • Have cleaning wipes or a small handheld vacuum for quick clean-ups.
  • Use air fresheners to neutralise odours between rides.

For drivers with allergies, it’s best to carry antihistamines and open the windows for ventilation when possible.

Making the Journey Comfortable for Everyone

A calm and well-prepared approach helps ensure a smooth ride with pets on board.

  • Speak to the passenger – Ask if their pet has any special needs before setting off.
  • Drive smoothly – Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns that might make an animal anxious.
  • Reassure other passengers – If a future rider has allergies or concerns, let them know your car is regularly cleaned.

Service First, Always

By following the law, keeping your vehicle clean, and handling pet-friendly requests professionally, you’ll ensure a smoother experience for both yourself and your passengers.
